This training module is intended to provide annual overview training on the topic of restraint for all school staff. This training does not qualify a person to administer restraint.
While many staff have received partial Safety Care training which involves de-escalation techniques, a limited number of personnel have received full restraint training. They are as follows:
Jordan Shane - Safety Care Instructor, Physical Education Teacher
Chris Doyon - Assistant Head of School
KD MacDonald - Executive Director of Academics
Melissa DeLeo - School Psychologist
If you encounter a situation in which you believe a restraint is necessary, please seek assistance to communicate the emergency as quickly as possible. A request for assistance should be made over channel 2 as follows:
"The SafetyCare team required at *location* for immediate assistance." Under no circumstances may a staff member place hands on any student, however, staff members may use reasonable force to defend themselves from assault or imminent serious physical harm.
Physical restraints are rare and only used when necessary to protect members of the school community from physical harm. Only properly trained staff may restrain students in order to prevent or minimize harm to the student during the restraint. All uses of restraint must be reported to the Head of School.
At Marblehead Community Charter Public School, chemical and mechanical restraints are not used.
The school's policy related to restraints as it appears in the Staff & Faculty Handbook is as follows:
Members of the MCCPS staff have a right to defend their own personal safety using a minimal amount of reasonable force when necessary, however, under no circumstances should staff who are not specially trained engage in any type of physical restraint, either as a means to protect others or as a form of punishment. If a student engages in unsafe behavior that may require a physical restraint, an immediate radio call should be made on channel 2 saying “The SafetyCare team required at *location* for immediate assistance.”
